Picking up the threads
You found me. Thank you for following the thread I left in the meta labyrinth. It was not always easy to see my way out of the social media maze, but I am confident that it is the right decision for me.
At first I thought the solution was replacement (one social media app for another), but then I realized this was an opportunity to shake things up in a bigger way and to reclaim my time and attention. I have been on social media since the early days of Facebook, back when you needed a college email to set up an account. That was 18 years ago! Social media has changed a lot since then. And so have I.
When I thought about what I wanted to leave behind and what I wanted to take with me in this transition I decided that I still want to share my creative work with people who are interested in seeing it. I started my mending account five years ago for the purpose of joining in on #mendmarch, an Instagram challenge that offers a mending related prompt for each day of the month. Every year people join in from all over the world and it’s so inspiring and fun! I’ve discovered a lot of amazing creative accounts and learned so much over the years that I’ve participated. Seeing as how another #mendmarch is just around the corner, I thought it would be a nice way to bookend the @honoringthethread Instagram account. One last monthlong mending challenge before I shut down my social media accounts! After that this newsletter will be where I focus my efforts to inspire others to mend their clothes and embrace repair culture. I want to keep making things and fixing things and sharing what I learn!
So that’s what this space will be for. I hope to have a few updates a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. I’m so glad you’re here! Thank you for honoring the thread with me.
